What to see in Tuscan Maremma

Trip ideas and best places to see during your stay in Orbetello

Are you planning your vacations in Tuscany? Would you like to know the best places to visit in Tuscan Maremma? Find out what to see in a day-trip from our Orbetello Camping Village.

Let’s start our trip through a territory rich in landscape beauties, history and culture.

The Tuscan Maremma is a coastal region on Tyrrhenian Sea, extending from Livorno and Grosseto. A heterogeneous territory that discloses a crystalline sea, promotories (most famous is the Argentario), mountains, verdant hills and lagoons.

A characteristic scenery that steals the heart and the eyes of visitors from all over the world.

Following the trails of ancient Etruscans (about 1 hour away)

Etruscans settled in Maremma in ancient times, and for centuries they took benefits from the natural fruits of this area.

During their stay in Maremma, Etruscans left many signs of precious historical and cultural value.

One of the most famous and interesting Etruscan structure is named “Vie Cave”: uniques and breathtaking paths hollowed in tuff hills. It is not entirely clear the application of these itineraries, but probably Etruscans built it to store and direct rainwater.

Another probable purpose of the “Vie Cave” is to have a strategic pass between the areas of the territory.

Beyond all the doubts about their origins, the astonishment for the visitors is the only certainty.

Capalbio Castle (about half hour away)

Talking about the history of Maremma, we have to mention one of the most charming and elegant element: the Castle of Capalbio.

The castle was built in 12th century for defense and strategic control purposes around the promontory. The fortress was part of Tre Fontane Abbey property.

Later, the House of Aldobrandeschi took control of the castle (named then Rocca Aldobrandesca) and extended it, to dominate and overlooking Capalbio and its surroundings.

After historical events and different adimistrations in Tuscan Maremma, since 15th century the Republic of Siena took the ownership of the castle and converted it in its southern military outpost.

Current appearance of the fort is a result of the restorations and mofidications made by senesi.

In 16th century, after the fall of Siena, the castle of Capalbio has been related to Grand Duchy of Tuscany and thus part of the Medici’s properties.

Nowadays, the marvelous castle hosts art expositions and cultural events, for this reasons the Castle of Capalbio is one of the best places to visit in Tuscan Maremma if you are looking for a contact with an ancient past.

The itineraries of Parco Regionale della Maremma Toscana (about 45 minutes away)

Tuscany is famous for its itineraries in parks and natural reserves. You should not miss a visit to Parco Regionale della Maremma Toscana.

Administrated by the province of Grosseto, the park has a 98kmq surface.

This area (where once Aldobrandeschi raised up their point of view against Saracen) is today a naturalist oasis rich in fauna and flora.

During your visit to Parco Regionale della Maremma you could observe storks, flamingos, deers and Maremmano horses.

There are a lot of opportunities to experience and passing through the park: you can have a long walk, riding bike or horse or you can choose a canoa tour.

Isola del Giglio (with ferry-boat)

Let’s go on with our journey between the natural beauties and astounding views of Maremma.

Giglio Island is one of the most suggestive and immaculate destinations in Italy.

The island is part of Tuscan Archipelago and is situated in front of Monte Argentario and has some of the most beautiful beaches in Maremma, nestled between sweet promotories and hidden inlets.

A precious and rare gem, full of cycling itineraries and hiking trails, Giglio Island is one of favourite places for underwater diving thanks of its clear water.

A territory with an identity still savage and pure, as a few in the world, where you can experience a wonderful nature and have a direct contact with it.

⇒Here more informations about Isola del Giglio and ferry-boat times.

Saturnia: thermal baths and most ancient village in Italy (about 1 hour away)

Saturnia is situated in municipality of Manciano (in the province of Grosseto) and its famous thermal baths deserve to be quoted in our must-see places list.

First settlements in Saturnia are documented since Bronze Age, while the presence of Etruscan is testified by the ruins of necropolis and archaeological evidences from 8th century a.C.

The archaeological tourism (together with the thermal tourism) represents the fulcrum of the touristic offer of the area. Before to go to thermal baths, you should take a few hours to visit the Archaeological Museum of Saturnia.

Between Tuscany thermal destinations, Saturnia’s thermal baths are maybe the most famous and appreciated by visitors from all over the world. The water has a lot of beneficial properties and flows with a 37 degrees centigrade temperature.

Almost 800 liters per second flows from the subsoil, bringing all the precious natural and mineral elements as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

Choose Saturnia thermal baths to take some time for wellness of the body and the mind.
